COVID-19 – Current information on office hours

Office hours for face-to-face (in-person) appointments are currently, without exception, only Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and only by appointment with the relevant adviser (see below). Appointments can be made by phone or email. Please note that you will be required to bring and wear a face mask when you attend a face-to-face appointment. Applicants will only be admitted individually, i.e. not accompanied by anyone else.

Assessment of foreign qualifications

Assessment of foreign examination certificates should facilitate assessment of the value of school qualifications attained abroad and thorough evaluation of comparability with an Austrian school qualification.

The assessment provided primarily helps with job hunting.

The assessment does not replace recognition of qualifications for access to professions regulated by law, or validation of certificates.

There is no charge for a request for assessment, which can be made online at: www.asbb.at

(Technical support: asbb.helpdesk@srt.solutions)

Validation of foreign qualifications

Qualifications from a school attended abroad or examinations taken abroad can be recognised as equivalent (validation) if the validation is required for attainment of eligibility.

Validation of foreign (matriculation) certificates is based on comparison of the examinations passed and the course attended with a corresponding Austrian qualification.

Appropriate additional examinations must be prescribed if there is insufficient proof for individual subjects. The additional examinations are taken in the form of examinations for external candidates (in German only) at an appropriate school.

Public opening hours: Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am – 12 pm.

Part-time vocational schools

Please note: various bodies are responsible for validation because of the dual system in Austrian education. Only the Federal Ministry of Education validates school qualifications (part-time vocational school certificates); requests for validation of foreign teaching professions that grant eligibility to exercise a profession are to be directed to the Federal Ministry of Digital and Economic Affairs.

Kindergarten teacher and social pedagogy diplomas (from EU/EEA countries, Switzerland or third countries)

Assessments:

An assessment does not authorise you to work as a kindergarten teacher or social pedagogue in Austria, as these are regulated professions. Regulated professions require either a formal recognition procedure to be carried out (if you trained in EU/EEA/Switzerland) or a validation process (if you trained in a third country).

Procedure for formal recognition of qualifications (from EU/EEA countries or Switzerland):

Application must be made to the respective competent Federal Government offices for formal recognition procedures in accordance with EU Directive 2005/36/EC for qualifications from EU/EEA countries or Switzerland. These offices will also conduct the procedures.

Validation process (third countries):

  1. Contact the competent official (+43 1 53120 2835; harald.ottmann@bmbwf.gv.at) or assessment via the Recognition Application Information System (AAIS) (studies).
  2. After it has been established that vocational education and training in third countries is comparable with the respective Austrian vocational education and training for kindergarten teaching or social pedagogy (amongst other things you will need original supporting documents, translations of these by translators sworn as translators in Austria, certification, etc.), you will be required to contact the competent official (again) for information about further procedure.
  3. After the contents have been checked, the correct supporting documents supplied, etc., you will receive a decision which sets out any ways in which the vocational education and training in a third country does not compare to that in Austria. The examinations listed in the decision must be taken at a corresponding institution (Training Institute for Early Childhood Education – BAfEP, Training Institute for Social Pedagogy – BASOP).
  4. After validation the foreign diploma/certificate is equivalent to an Austrian diploma/certificate.

N.B.: Public consultations are held every Tuesday and Thursday (working days) from 9 am to 12 pm. You are requested to please telephone the official handling your request beforehand.

Please send originals only by agreement (by telephone or email) with the official dealing with your request.
