Training Institutes for Early Childhood Education* (Bildungsanstalten für Elementarpädagogik, BAfEP)

Training Institutes for Early Childhood Education provide a comprehensive general education as well as a professional attitude, specialist knowledge and skills which are required to fulfil the educational tasks in ECEC institutions – such as kindergartens – for children before they enter school.

*Renamed on 1.9.2016; previously Training Institute for Kindergarten Education (Bildungsanstalten für Kindergartenpädagogik, BAKIP)

Training Institutes for Social Pedagogy (Bildungsanstalten für Sozialpädagogik, BASOP)

Training Institutes for Social Pedagogy provide a comprehensive general education as well as a professional attitude, specialist knowledge and skills which are required for education and educational tasks in after-school care centres, boarding accommodation, day-care centres, other services for children, adolescents and (young) adults as well as in extracurricular youth work.

There are also other training courses for students wishing to work in the social pedagogy field. However, the BASOP course is the only form of training recognised by all bodies (employers) throughout Austria.

Three-year Colleges for Teaching Assistant Careers (Fachschulen für pädagogische Assistenzberufe)

Colleges for Teaching Assistant Careers in ECEC teach the professional ethos, knowledge and skills required for assisting with education and care responsibilities in ECEC institutions for children from the first year of their lives until they start school.

As teaching assistants have educational knowledge, they help ECEC teachers to prepare educational work. The ECEC teacher is still responsible for educational decisions, however.

Universities

The universities are responsible for the high-quality initial, continuing and further training of teachers and the research activities that are fundamental to this, for example in the areas of professional research, teaching and learning research, pedagogy, specialised didactics, school and lesson development.
