Animal testing

The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) is entrusted with enforcing the Animal Testing Act 2012 (TVG 2012), so it is the authority bearing primary responsibility for animal testing at universities and at non-university research institutions of the Federal Government.

The BMBWF therefore bears primary responsibility on matters involving animal testing, in particular the coordination of animal testing statistics and reports to the European Commission and under the Animal Testing Directive 2010/63/EU (Directive 2010/63/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 September 2010 on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes). The Animal Testing Commission of the Federal Government is set up at the BMBWF to advise the authorities and animal protection bodies pursuant to section 35 TVG 2012 (in German).
