Science diplomacy

The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) applies a broad range of science diplomacy tools to international research collaboration. They encompass, inter alia, bilateral agreements on scientific-technical collaboration with developing and newly industrialised countries, programmes to fund development research, participation in international research organisations that set the activities in this area, and the awarding of international prizes, especially to up-and-coming researchers from countries with minimal capacity in research, technology and innovation.

These measures seek to use support services such as low-threshold collaboration opportunities, expertise transfer, training and capacity-building actions, mobility options, etc. to target countries efficiently. The object is to help them to overcome scientific, economic, societal or political challenges and to build up sustainable relationships for collaboration. Developing and newly industrialised countries are special priorities in these efforts.
